Outboard model codes can identify power, shaft length, starting method, steering and part of the installed equipment. The same letter may have a different meaning between manufacturers, so every code must be read according to the brand's own system and checked against the specification of the selected version.
What to check before buying
| Parameter | Common options | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Power | hp / kW | Must not exceed the boat manufacturer's rating |
| Transom height | Short, long, extra-long | Determines the required shaft version |
| Steering | Tiller or remote | Depends on the boat and whether it has a console |
| Starting | Manual or electric | Affects convenience, battery and charging equipment |
| Trim / Tilt | Manual, gas-assisted or electro-hydraulic | Determines how the motor angle and height are adjusted |
| Fuel system | Carburettor or EFI | Affects starting, fuel delivery and service requirements |
| Rotation | Standard or counter-rotation | Relevant to selected twin-engine installations |
Important: do not select S, L, XL or XXL from an approximate measurement alone. Check the transom height in the boat documentation and the exact shaft specification for the motor.
Mercury designations
Mercury often combines several characteristics into one code. For example, ELPT identifies electric starting, a long shaft and electro-hydraulic Power Trim. The order of the letters matters.
| Code | Configuration |
|---|---|
| MH | Manual start, short shaft, tiller |
| MLH | Manual start, long shaft, tiller |
| EH | Electric start, short shaft, tiller |
| ELH | Electric start, long shaft, tiller |
| EPT | Electric start, short shaft, Power Trim |
| ELPT | Electric start, long shaft, Power Trim |
| ELHPT | Electric start, long shaft, tiller and Power Trim |
| CT | Command Thrust gearcase on applicable models |
| EFI | Electronic fuel injection |
Honda designations
Honda configuration codes are safest when read as complete combinations. For example, BF15 SHU and BF15 LHU have the same output and tiller steering but are intended for different transom heights.
| Code | Configuration |
|---|---|
| BF15 SHU | Short shaft, recoil start, tiller, 6 A charging system |
| BF15 LHU | Long shaft, recoil start, tiller, 6 A charging system |
| BF15 SRU | Short shaft, electric start and remote control |
| BF15 LRU | Long shaft, electric start and remote control |
| BF15 LRTU | Long shaft, electric start, remote control and Power Tilt |
| BF15 XRTU | Extra-long shaft, electric start, remote control and Power Tilt |
Some smaller Honda models use exact shaft dimensions that differ from the usual approximate values. Honda specifies 433 mm for selected S versions of the BF15/BF20 and 563 mm for the corresponding L versions.
Suzuki designations
DF identifies Suzuki's four-stroke range and the number identifies rated power. A letter such as A, B or C immediately after the number is part of the model series or generation; it does not by itself describe the equipment level.
| Example | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| DF2.5 / DF6A / DF20A | Range and rated power; the letter after the number is part of the model generation |
| DF40ATL | 40 hp, electric start, remote steering, Power Trim and a 508 mm long shaft |
| S / L in the full code | Short / long shaft where applicable |
Always check the full configuration code and identification label because the shorter commercial name does not describe every feature of the supplied version.
HIDEA designations
For HIDEA EFI models, the complete code differentiates tiller and remote steering, short and long shafts, and Power Trim & Tilt equipment.
| Code | Configuration |
|---|---|
| HDEF30HES-T | 30 hp EFI, tiller, electric start, short shaft, Power Trim & Tilt |
| HDEF30HEL-T | 30 hp EFI, tiller, electric start, long shaft, Power Trim & Tilt |
| HDEF30FES-T | 30 hp EFI, remote control, electric start, short shaft, Power Trim & Tilt |
| HDEF30FEL-T | 30 hp EFI, remote control, electric start, long shaft, Power Trim & Tilt |
| HDEF115FEXL-T | 115 hp EFI, remote control, electric start, extra-long shaft and Power Trim |
Ask us to confirm the correct model
Send us the boat make and model, maximum permitted engine power, transom height, and preferred steering and starting system. If possible, add a photograph of the boat identification plate. We will confirm the suitable power, shaft length and the equipment required for installation and steering.
